Government Fixes Energy Prices Disrparities

HC Research reported today that:

Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif announced the beginning of the implementation of the new energy prices, which will be applicable for energy intensive industries (cement, fertilizers, petrochemicals, and steel). New natural gas prices are set at USD3 per MBTU for energy intensive industries. Other industries will witness an increase in natural gas prices from USD1.25 per MBTU to USD2.65 per mbtu over three years with an increase of USD0.46 per MBTU per year.  (Al Masry Al Yom)

Although the gap between energy prices in Egypt and the rest of the world remains a large one (It is about $14 mBTU in Spain, $22 mBTU in Japan), but this is a step in the right direction. The government needs to set the stage for industry growth through subsidies to remain competitive but it has to be relatively close to not waste our wealth.

Pionners Holding Co (PIOH.CA) is trading at LE9.5 Bn!

Just a couple of weeks, I wrote about Pioneers Holdings Co getting a LE2,750 Bn valuation. I wrote then, that my hat is off for the effort they made in turning this company around. Pioneers Holdings (PIOH.CA) is now trading at LE9.5Bn. Ok, something is really wrong here.

First, how did we move from LE2.5 Bn to LE9.5Bn in less than one month. They do have their own investment banking, which conducted their own valuation, could they have been wrong by 5x! Private placement pricing is usually 20 to 25% different than the IPO price, this is not 50% different, this is 400% off!  read more »

Castle Zaman will never stop to amaze me!

Castle Zaman never stops to amaze me. First, it is the food. You can autmatically know the difference between what's fake food once you take your first bite at the Castle. The technique they use is called Slow food (vs fast food) and takes on average 3-4 hours to cook your royal meal. The veggies are mouth watering and the meat is well...orgasmic. Second is the location. I don't know of a better location, see for yourself here. Third, is the super friendly service that you get here. Finally, it is the amazing architecture and the boldness of the concept. It takes amazing vision to go after a fantastic project like this. Others could have done a half assed job at this, but not Hany. Absolutely outstanding concept. Take a walk in the labyrinth  or treat yourself to a message in one of the rooms underneath the restaurant.
I wish them all the luck in the world!

Naeem's Pre-IPO Fund could rescue the Nilex

Naeem Holding (NAHO.CA) announced today that they are starting a $19M pre-IPO fund. The aim is to look for 8 - 9 companies and list them on the Nilex within a year. This is a great idea in my opinion and one that can greatly benefit the SME sector in Egypt. The problem is that I don't think it economically makes sense for them given the amount of effort it is going to take their team to source those 8 - 9 companies. Of course, they are probably aware of their cost / profit margins. However, what I can discuss is the view from the operations side of things, the mechanics, something that usually escapes bankers.

Pioneers Holding Co (PIOH.CA) gets a LE2,750 Bn Valuation

From HC Morning News quoting Zawya Dow Jones

Kuwait's Public Institution for Social Security, or Pifss, has acquired a 4%stake in Pioneers Holding Company for EGP110 million which constitutes 20 million shares at EGP5.5 each. (Zawya Dow Jones)

The Pfiss (what a weird name, I am sure they could have thought of a better name!) has valued Pioneers Hol Co for LE2.750B ($500M) First, it is an amazing feat that a brokerage company that was not on the radar 10 years ago and nearly bankrupt can command such a turnaround. My hat is off to them. Second, it shows the wide gap that (understandbly) EFG-Hermes has pulled from them. EFG's market cap is about LE 25Bn, 10x larger than Pioneers. Obviously, the experience, the breadth of investments, and the aggrevisness in conducting business has resulted in that wide gap.

All in all, this is a good news to the Egyptian investment industry in general.

Neqab...The Government Moves In

I was happily surprised when I read this article about the governement taking action against women wearing the neqab (monaqabat) in hospitals. The basic premise that was publicized behind the ban are health reasons (sanitation) and that the profession requires interaction between patient and health care provider. I suspect, as well as the experts interviewed, that efficient interaction can occur while the caretaker is hiding behind a mask (for lack of better words). The hidden and unspoken reason is perhaps security related. I believe that this is the argument that should be used against this cultural and *not* a religious phenomena.  read more »

Better planning would really help!

Today the Egyptian government has (finally) increased its prices on, mainly, oil and cigarettes. Flamable situation if you ask me (pun intended). This is not a surprise when we all know that the government subsidies have reached a level that is unbearable. On the other hand, although I am not discussing the paradox of increasing wages by 30% on the President's 80th birthday, and then let people face a 20 to 35% price hikes!

Anyways, I am trying to look at the point from a strategy perspective in handing issues like these.   read more »

It is the Transparency, Stupid!

It happened before with Banque Du Caire and it is happening again with Agrium Egypt. What "possibly" could be a good project for the country gets hid away from the public fearing "that they wouldn't just understand" Well, here you go, it won't work. You need to be out there, talking to the public about the prospects of your good project. Talk to them about their possible fears, the age where the government is just going to expect its people just to listen and bow is long gone. Egyptians, like many in other developing countries, can and will say no when things "seem" like it is not in their best interest.
